The facts about nuclear power

Why it is: Dangerous - Bad For The Environment - Unaffordable

"Nuclear power plants are, next to nuclear warheads themselves, the most dangerous devices that man has ever created. Their construction and proliferation is the most irresponsible, in fact the most criminal, act ever to have taken place on this planet."

Patrick Moore, Assault on Future Generations, 1976

Is Nuclear Power safe?

Recent studies show that Nuclear Power is much more dangerous to health than previously thought.

Michael Meacher, as Environment Minister, set up the Committee Examining Radiation Risks of Internal Emitters, an advisory body which looked into the large amount of evidence that releasing radioactivity into the environment may be far more dangerous than was previously thought. He believes “The true effects of radioactive discharges must be resolved before any commitment to new nuclear power stations is made.”

Chernobyl fallout

In the 21 years since the Chernobyl disaster spread fallout around the globe, hundreds of studies have shown increased rates of many diseases, ranging from cancer and leukaemia through congenital deformity to general life shortening diseases. They are particularly apparent in areas near Chernobyl, but are also seen in Northern Sweden where cancer increased by at least 30% in the years up to 1996. Leukaemias diagnosed in children increased sharply in many other European countries. More ...

Low level ionising radiation

Even very low doses of radiation can cause cancer. All Nuclear Power Stations emit radioactive materials into the air and water around them every day in operation. On top of this are occasional accidents. Our own Nuclear power stations at Berkeley and Oldbury have had many minor accidents – raising the level of radiation either in the air or into the River Severn. More ...

There are many cases of clusters of childhood leukaemia and abnormal childhood health statistics around Nuclear Power plants in Britain – at Lydney, Sellafield, Hinkley. We must not take the risk of harming our children when so much evidence points to their being links between low level radiation and increases in cancer.
